New England Seafood International CEO Dan Aherne said Tuesday that rival Young's Seafood's failed effort to push into the US market is a lesson in the complexities of understanding the nuances of overseas consumers.

Young's Seafood's high-profile launch into the US market in 2018 fell flat, and with news that the UK group has lost its listing at retail giant Walmart, it is not likely the brand will be gaining major market share anytime soon.

Aherne, speaking at the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute's (ASMI) virtual All-Hands meeting, said that while he does not know "the ins and outs" of how the product was received in the US market, "you always hear the soundbites of how great it is all going until [things are] not going great."
