Vietnamese exporters of canned tuna to may look to turn their attention to the Middle East to offset a slowdown in demand in traditional markets, The Voice of Vietnam reports.

The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) cites the Middle East region as a way to boost to boost growth for the country's exports.

The report honed in on Vietnam Customs statistics showing export of tuna to Middle East nations climbed 42 percent in the first nine months of 2018.

The Middle East imports some 16 million tuna cans, or 200,000 metric tons of tuna with Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Israel the largest customers.

Vietnam could rake in $500 million (€436 million) from tuna exports this year, the report said.
