Grimsby fish smokers have been left in the dark over UK government plans for a branded scheme designed to replace the European Union's Protected Geographical Indicators (PGI) for products once the United Kingdom leaves the trade bloc.

This is because the UK government has not made it clear whether it will offer reciprocal protection for European goods granted PGI status under the replacement scheme.

To be granted the European Union's Protected Geographical Indicators (PGI) designation, products must be traditionally and at least partially prepared, processed or produced within a specific region and be deemed to have acquired unique properties.
