Russian will launch a national brand of fish that will largely look to compete with US pollock products in the United States, according to an official with the country's Federal Agency of Fisheries.

Russia intends to launch the brand dubbed "Russian Fish" to promote its seafood, Deputy Head of the Federal Agency for Fishery Pyotr Savchuk told the Russsian News Agency (TASS) Thursday at the China Fisheries at the 24th China Fisheries & Seafood Expo in Qingdao. TASS is a Russian state-controlled news service.

Savchuck also commented on the ongoing trade war between the US and China providing Russia with a competitive advantage in selling pollock in particular to US consumers, according to Russia Business Today.

"Right now, we are working on creating a national brand called Russian Fish," Savchuk told TASS. "We have been talking about establishing this enterprise for two or three years, and now this decision has been made. We estimate that it will take between 6 and 12 months to promote the brand, which will become global."

He noted a nonprofit will be set up to market the brand, and will involve Russia's fishing industries as well.

He said the brand will highlight the advantages of Russian fish as a "purely organic product, distinguished by the fine quality that comes from a wild habitat."
