The supply of Nile Perch from Lake Victoria has been on the low side in recent years, and prices are “considerably high” as a result, according to EU importers of the species.

“Prices are the highest we have seen in years,” Arjan Oosterlee, commercial director at Anova Seafood – one of the largest importers of Nile perch into the EU – told IntraFish.

Nile Perch is caught in Lake Victoria by bordering countries Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. Tanzania controls the largest portion of Africa’s largest freshwater lake, with 49 percent, and has the most fishermen.
