NOAA Fisheries said Wednesday that beginning April 7 all filings for seafood products covered under the new Seafood Import Monitoring Program (SIMP) must comply with the electronic filing requirements in order for a product to receive a “may proceed” and enter the United States.

SIMP established reporting and record keeping requirements for imports of certain seafood products to prevent illegal, unreported and unregulated and/or misrepresented seafood from entering the US market.

The law took effect on January 1, however, NOAA Fisheries adopted an “informed compliance” that effectively allowed additional time for companies to come into compliance with the new law.
