Market analyst Kontali's latest monthly report on the salmon market showed a surprising jump in EU market share for the species, with a 6 percent growth in the first half alone.

Recent decades have shown a declining trend for EU market share. In 1995, the EU accounted for 62 percent of global farmed salmon sales, while this year was on pace to hit just 43 percent -- the lowest percentage ever.

However, the EU has increased its market share by 6 percent already in the first half alone, the result in large part from non-Norwegian European salmon production in areas like the Faroes, Scotland, Ireland and Iceland, according to Kontali.
