A number of Italian supermarkets decided to halt sales of pangasius in a move similar to that of Carrefour Belgium last week.

According to reports in Il Messaggero, Italian retailers such as Esselunga have already banned sales, and Coop has excluded pangasius from its private label range.

Carrefour’s Italian unit is also expected to join them after ceasing sales in France and Belgium, warning "pangasius farms have a high environmental impact," and adding "once stocks of this species are depleted, this fish will no longer be sold."

In addition, the Italian region of Emilia Romagna has removed pangasius completely from the menu of school canteens.
