French discount stores are making inroads into the fresh fish market at the expense of previously all-conquering hypermarkets through sales of pre-packaged products.

The trend is highlighted in research carried out by industry trade body FranceAgrimer and market research company Kantar Worldpanel.

"We see that the trend towards pre-packaged products sold in plastic trays has been cemented and in particular among discount stores," Jérome Lafon from FranceAgrimer told IntraFish.

Discounters' market penetration for fresh fish has increased to 11.2 percent from 7 percent since 2015.
