The Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday released findings of the 2014 Health and Diet Survey, a periodic national telephone survey of adults in the 50 states and Washington, D.C.

Its purpose is "to help the FDA make informed regulatory, education and other decisions," according to the report.

The survey showed that around 87 percent of adults knew of omega-3 fatty acids, and of those, 62 percent said it lowered the risk of heart disease, but 24 percent did not know what effects it had on heart disease.
