Undercutting prices of fresh fish and seafood is damaging the reputation of the whole category, Deutsche See CEO Hartwig Retzlaff told the audience during the IntraFish Seafood Investor Forum in London last week.

While discounters and the rise of MAP products have seemingly boosted growth in the category, the growth isn't sustainable, he said.

"Of course discounters do offer additional possibilities, but traditionally the discount segment has price as its main feature," he said. "And compared to other retailers that is a terribly low price level."
