French supermarket giant Carrefour said from now on 100 percent of the farmed shrimp sold at its in-store fishmonger counters and on chilled seafood shelves in France will be Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) approved.

The move does not include frozen products.

Shrimp is the retailer's second biggest seafood seller and is seen as a flagship product. The move comes as Carrefour steps up its sustainable sourcing policy.

"Carrefour is the only hypermarket in France to be ASC/MSC certified for shrimp, so it's the only retailer that can add ASC value to the traditional in-store fishmonger counter," Gaetan de Lamberterie, the retailer's seafood market director told IntraFish.
