Russian fishing giant Norebo's acquisition of a company owned by a Samherji subsidiary linked to the ongoing cash-for-quotas investigations in Namibia brings yet another major seafood company into the spotlight as the structure of the Icelandic giant's vast and complex empire becomes more clear.

Norebo's 2013 purchase of Katla Seafood Canaria SLU from Samherji-owned Katla Seafood was unrelated to any of Samherji's Namibian activities, the company claims, but Katla has been among the companies facing scrutiny in the probe.

Katla Seafood has so far played a minor role in the Samherji scandal, with Icelandic media briefly speculating it may have been used to launder money via Samherji's other subsidiary and one of Katla's owners, Esja Seafood, based in Cyprus.
