Fishing company Sanford could lose millions of dollars if a New Zealand court decides a 2017 illegal fishing offence deserves forfeiture of the vessel and catches associated it.

Sanford is awaiting sentencing in the case involving its vessel San Waitaki in which it has pleaded guilty to the charges of bottom trawling in a benthic protected area (BPA).

"Fishing by our vessel in this area was utterly unintentional," said Sanford in a statement sent to IntraFish.
