Earlier this year, salmon giant Mowi was fined NOK 16.3 million (€1.5 million/$1.6 million) by the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE-RME) for illegal water extraction.

The claim affects its hatcheries in Orkland municipality and Kinn municipality in western and central Norway, respectively.

"There is no basis for the fine regarding the site in Orkland," Mowi said in documents seen by IntraFish.

"The assessment is incorrect. The culpability assessment carried out suffers from errors, and Mowi has not acted negligently," Mowi stated in the documents.
