Young’s Seafood’s project Trawlight won the award in the Sustainable Use of Natural Resources category at the Foodservice Footprint Awards of 2017.

The project tackles the issue of juvenile catch by reducing the amount of under-sized fish landed by attaching lights to the escape panels of the trawl to guide small fish out of the net.

Early trials suggested that the method can reduce juvenile catch by up to 40 percent.

In addition, the lights automatically switch on when they are in the water, and off again when they are out of the water, saving energy when they are not in use.

“Young’s Foodservice aim to be at the forefront of innovation and leading the industry towards a greater focus on the sustainable use of our natural resources,” said David Parker, marine biologist and head of CSR at Young’s Seafood.
