Alaska crab has been a mixed bag this year for fishermen. While some stocks are presenting a challenge, others are healthy and meeting huge market demand.
"Crab stocks in Alaska and anywhere are some of the most cyclical and volatile stocks and present tremendous challenges to fisheries managers," Alaska Bering Sea Crabbers (ABSC) Executive Director Tyson Fick told IntraFish.
Fishermen and seafood companies are working with state regulators to focus on better strategies for harvesting crabs such as tanner and bairdi while other stocks, such as opilio, recover.
