The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a Seattle-based fishing trawler in the Bering Sea on Tuesday as a storm swept toward the western Alaskan coastline at the start of cod harvesting season.
Amidst hurricane-force winds and 40-foot waves, the Rebecca Irene, a 143-foot trawler with 34 people aboard, lost power in one of its two engines early Tuesday and had limited propulsion.
After a call for help, the Coast Guard Cutter Sherman transferred 20 nonessential crew while 14 remained on board, Petty Officer 1st Class Sara Francis said.
