US President Donald Trump will be visiting Bangor, Maine--the nation's whitest state--on Friday to sign a proclamation supporting the commercial fishing industry, despite protests erupting all over the United States over police brutality towards African Americans.
Trump will arrive in Bangor around 1:50 pm local time, where he will sign the proclamation before taking a helicopter to Guilford, Maine, where he will be talking about jobs and visiting Puritan Medical Swabs, according to the Bangor Daily News.
Trump is expected to sign a proclamation that would open up a marine national monument in the Atlantic Ocean to commercial fishing, according to Reuters.
There is no expectation that Trump will be discussing aquaculture at the event, though Maine is home to Cooke Aquaculture's salmon farming operations. Cooke salmon was served at Trump's inauguration, and company CEO Glenn Cooke last month publicly praised Trump days after the president signed an executive order designed to boost the domestic aquaculture sector, among other objectives.
In addition, the state has become a central area for planned land-based salmon and kingfish farming projects, including Nordic Aquafarms, Whole Oceans and Kingfish Zeeland.
In September of 2016, US President Barack Obama established the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument. The monument is located about 130 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and is approximately the size of Connecticut. It is the only marine national monument in the Atlantic Ocean, according to the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
Last month, Trump signed an executive order that aims to boost the domestic seafood industry by streamlining aquaculture development and "cutting red tape" on the fisheries sector.
While that announcement largely focused on ways to jump-start US offshore aquaculture, it also called for a seafood trade task force to be created to help better monitor issues such as illegal fishing.
The order from May also directed the US Secretary of Commerce to give regional fishery management councils 180 days to submit "a prioritized list of recommended actions to reduce burdens on domestic fishing and to increase production within sustainable fisheries, including a proposal for initiating each recommended action within one year of the date of this order."
