He says it’s a good question because what generally works in Looe and the South West may not work elsewhere.
“The local fleet has a few boats of 45ft and bigger. It has evolved because it began with smaller boats and some under-10s. But now on the bigger boats, they normally use two 12-fathom nets with a 500ft spread between the doors. If you compare that with the conventional single net rig they would work a 14-fathom trawl and look toward 350ft of spread, so with twin-rigging you gain 150ft of spread with 24-fathom footrope compared to 14 fathoms.
