The International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) on Wednesday recommended quota increases for Norwegian coastal cod, bringing a renewed sense of hope for the country regaining its Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for the larger inshore cod fishery.

There was heightened anticipation for the ICES coastal cod quota advice this year because of the bearing it has on the MSC recertification approval of the inshore Northeast Arctic cod fishery, but also for announced regulatory measures that will help rebuild the coastal cod stock.
