Retail giant Tesco said it will stop buying yellowfin tuna sourced from the Indian Ocean unless a "credible and effective recovery plan" is put in place to rebuild stocks.

Under its store brand products, the group sells skipjack (cans and sandwiches) and yellowfin (frozen or chilled steaks).

Tuna fisheries are managed by Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs), but 20 percent of the tuna is caught globally from the Indian Ocean, which falls under the remit of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) RFMO.
