The Spanish Fisheries Confederation (Cepesca) will appear in court to defend the interests of the companies who “do things right” amid an illegal Atlantic bluefin tuna scandal currently under investigation in Spain.

Javier Garat general secretary of Cepesca, told IntraFish that the confederation will be present during the case to understand what has happened and to be able to defend those in the sector who operate with honesty and integrity.

The open case – which has been called “Operacion Tarantelo” – is an ongoing investigation carried out by the Spanish Civil Guard which has uncovered an illegal plot by which operators have allegedly traded around 3,500 metric tons of illegally caught and unreported Atlantic bluefin tuna a year to Spain – 2,500 metric tons from Malta, and 1,000 metric tons from Italy.
