Scotland-based The Ethical Shellfish Company announced this week it is "closing its doors for good," succumbing to the challenges of Brexit, the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change.

In a newsletter to customers, the Isle of Mull company said running an ethical fishing business presented “real challenges, which, when combined with the events of the past few years, have in the end defeated us.”

The small firm started selling ethically sourced seafood 12 years ago, including creel-caught lobster, brown crab and langoustine, as well as hand-dived king scallops, oysters and mussels.
