Peruvian authorities have given the green light for a 10-day exploratory anchovy fishing expedition in key north-central waters, a trip that will determine whether the canceled first season can resume.

News of the development was published overnight in the government's official journal.

The fishery is a key supplier of raw material to the global fishmeal industry. The cancellation of the first anchovy season is causing an “acute shortage” of fish oil and fishmeal, resulting in record high prices for both commodities through the remainder of 2023, Gorjan Nikolik, senior global seafood specialist at Rabobank, told IntraFish.
