RUSSIAN fish landings in Norway are on the increase again according to the research organisation Nofima.

The Norwegian Fishermen’s Sales Organisation – one of the pioneers of co-operation with the Russians – has reported that their fishermen sold 120,000 tonnes in 2007 through the sales organisation.

One explanation for this revival could be the stricter international control regime for transhipping Barents Sea fish.

Another is increasing fuel costs making the Norwegian distribution system more attractive. A third is that the Russians gain access to a well developed sales system where costs are low and, at the same time, they achieve a good price for their catches.
