New technology will allow the trawl and seine vessel Libas to produce electricity as it rolls from side to side in the sea.

Libas, which is also being installed with battery and gas operations at a shipyard in Turkey, is the first commercial vessel to employ a power-producing stabilizing tank.

"This is a major step that shows this technology is commercially attractive," said Louis Ludwig, CEO of Gear Consult, the supplier of the technology from French company GEPS Techno.

Just like other stabilizing tanks, the one onboard Libas is filled with water, but what is new is a turbine at each end of the tank that produces power.
