A 10-day exploratory period for anchovy and anchoveta fishing in Peru's north central zone will begin at midnight on Tuesday, following authorization from Peru’s Instituto del Mar del Peru.

The opening of the window may be a prelude to an announcement on quota and dates for the the fishery's first season.

The research fishery will be used to assess distribution and sizes of the anchovy along with the presence of other species.

Should the season mirror last year's it could begin this month and run into April 2020, depending on what level of quota, scientists decide upon.
