The developer of the Pebble Mine copper and gold project in southwest Alaska said Thursday it is filing its first permit application for the mine.

The project seemed dead under the Obama administration, but is now moving forward under US President Donald Trump, a champion of increased domestic mining, reports Reuters.

The mine was proposed more than a decade ago, but opponents in the seafood industry and elsewhere have been able to halt its progress because of the project's proximity to Alaska’s Bristol Bay, the world’s largest sockeye salmon fishery.
