The capsizing of a Spanish fishing vessel in the waters off Newfoundland, Canada, has now claimed nine lives, and several more crewmen remain missing, according toLa Voz de Galicia.

The 18-year old vessel Villa de Pitanxo, owned by the Nores de Marin Group, part of the Port of Vigo fishing boats cooperative, capsized early on Tuesday morning.

To date, three survivors have been rescued from the 24-person crew, which was made up of 16 Spanish nationals, five Peruvians and three Ghanaians.

Overnight authorities raised the number of dead to 10, noting that 11 of the crew were still missing.

But on Wednesday Spanish authorities corrected that figure, stating nine are dead with 12 missing.

Members of the Canadian Maritime Rescue Service are searching the area of ​​the upturned vessel.
