While the Nigerian market is no longer completely closed to mackerel imports, it remains sluggish, with importers facing other types of bureaucracy and a volatile currency.

For the past few years Nigeria -- one of the largest importers of mackerel worldwide -- has been almost completely closed to foreign imports in the government's attempt to get the country more self-sufficient.

Although better, the market is still slow with Nigerian clients only importing small amounts of mackerel at a time, Katja Nowak Nielsen, chief operating officer at Danish trader Nowaco, told IntraFish.

The
