The International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF) is urging the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) to further enhance the management of stocks and reduce bycatch in Indian Ocean’s tuna fisheries.

The IPNLF said successful initiatives implemented in 2016 such as the harvest control rule (HCR) for skipjack tuna and other measures to rebuild yellowfin stocks should encourage the IOTC to continue the momentum and tackle other issues threatening the sustainability of the Indian Ocean tuna fisheries.

“It is time to take responsible fisheries management up to the next level," said Adam Baske, director of policy and outreach at IPNLF.
