The Norwegian Fisheries Act environmental council is hopeful that the northeast Atlantic mackerel fishery can be re-certified to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standard following a quota recommendation upgrade by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES).

In March, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) suspended the certification of northeast Atlantic mackerel based on the stock assessment from ICES in October 2018, which showed a downward trend for mackerel stock.

However, an ICES report published in April, reviewing methods used in the 2018 assessment, led scientists to recommend a quota of 770,358 metric tons, up from the prior recommendation of 450,000 metric tons.
