With recovery efforts, ongoing fishery improvement projects (FIPs) and continuing global demand, the "future potential" of Canadian cod has kept the sector's fortunes on the rise, Icewater Seafoods President and CEO Alberto Wareham told IntraFish.

Canada's cod catch is at roughly 20,000 metric tons, making the product a niche on global markets, Wareham said, but the Newfoundland fishery's unique structure means it can capitalize on its fast turnaround from catch to frozen product -- typically between 24 to 48 hours.
