The International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) on Thursday announced Atlantic cod harvests in the Greenland Sea and Icelandic waters next year could be increased from the total allowable catch (TAC) this year.

ICES advised a catch of 272,411 metric tons, a rise of 3 percent over this year's advised harvest of 264,437 metric tons, based on research showing an increasing spawning-stock biomass (SSB).

Fishing pressure is at historical lows, ICES noted, and recruitment has been stable since 1988.
