The quota for the Norwegian mackerel fishery for 2019 has more than doubled due to a revision in how the size of the mackerel stock is measured.

The International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) has increased the quota to 770,358 metric tons, over 450,000 tons higher than the original figure given last autumn.

New calculations made last autumn indicated that the stock was larger than previous thought, leading to 30 researchers from 15 countries meeting in March to revise the calculation method.
