The International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) is advising a 38 percent cut in the quota for Norwegian spring-spawning herring in the Northeast Atlantic and Arctic Ocean for 2023, as well as a 31 percent cut to the mackerel quota.

ICES is proposing a quota of 511,171 metric tons for herring next year, down from an estimated catch of 827,963 metric tons in 2022. The scientist proposed a total allowable catch of 598,588 metric tons for 2022.
