MEMORIAL University of Newfoundland has awarded Augustine ‘Gus’ Etchegary an Honorary Doctorate of Laws in recognition of his contribution to Newfoundland and Labrador through the Province’s fishery.

Newfoundlander Gus Etchegary was born in 1924, but did not grow up in a fishing boat as his family were in mining from the south coast community of St. Lawrence.

He worked in the local mine before leaving St. Lawrence in 1942 to train as an electrician with the American Navy.

In the late ’40s the Newfoundland fishery was in transition from salt-fish to the fresh-frozen business ushered in by the advent of freezing technology pioneered by Clarence Birdseye.
