Norwegian harvesting company Havfisk is recruiting a new chief engineer for its freeze trawler Kongsfjord, and is encouraging women to apply for this position.

Of 340 employees at the nine deep sea fishing trawlers the company has, only 15 are women, according to Anne Karin Ferstad, crew chief at Havfisk.

“We get some applications from women occasionally, but we would like to see more,” said Ferstad.

Currently, there’s more women graduating in fisheries studies than ever, said Janita Arhaug, an executive with Norwegian seafood recruitment agency Sett Sjøbein.
