Some 118 organizations including Thai Union, Chicken of the Sea, Calvo, Santa Monica Seafoods, Mitsubishi-owned Princes, UK retailer Tesco, Whole Foods and John West signed a petition asking Regional Fishing Management Organizations (RFMOs) for improvements in tuna management.

Signatories asked RFMOs to accelerate the development and implementation of precautionary harvest strategies as well as the implementation of an effective management of fish aggregating devices (FADs) and improvements in monitoring, control and surveillance tools in tuna fishing.

The letter was shared with the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission in advance of its annual meeting later this month and will also be sent to Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC), the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), and the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC).
