Leading German discounters and retailers teamed up with some of the country's seafood suppliers and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), urging the government and politicians to support the EU-wide introduction of the landing obligation on Jan. 1, 2019.
Signatories of the letter, seen by IntraFish, include discounters Aldi, Aldi Süd and Lidl, retailers Edeka, Kaufland and Metro, as well as seafood suppliers bofrost, followfish and Friedrichs.
The final introduction of the EU-wide landing obligation next year brings "big opportunities" such as healthy and profitable fish stocks as well as improved food security.
