Cape Town-headquartered fishing firm Irvin & Johnson (I&J) is one of the big guns in Africa's deep-sea and inshore fishing industry.

Founded in 1910, the AVI-owned, vertically-integrated group today boasts a fleet of three freezer trawlers and nine wetfish vessels. In addition, it has abalone farming operations about 200 kilometers southeast of Cape Town.

The IntraFish tour kicks off at I&J's operating room from where the division -- headed by I&J Marine Manager Gerard Wessels -- tracks the vessels, plans forward catches and coordinates with the processing facilities.
