Senior officials of the European Commission will attend a two-day conference on EU Arctic Policy on June 15-16 in Oulu, Finland.

Karmenu Vella, commissioner for environment, maritime affairs, and fisheries, will co-host the event, together with Federica Mogherini, the high representative of the European Union for foreign affairs and security policy and vice president of the European Commission, as well as Timo Soini, Finnish minister for foreign affairs.

The event will look at innovative approaches to address the challenges confronting the Arctic, such as the new opportunities in the unexplored waters and the threat of climate change in the area.

Delegates will discuss ways to ensure the environmental protection and sustainable development of the Arctic to the benefit of local communities, including indigenous peoples.

In addition, they will tackle issues as international cooperation at the political, economic and technical levels in the Arctic.
