The European Union will be seeking to maintain its free access to UK waters after Brexit, in exchange for the free access Britain is seeking to the EU seafood market, a topic that puts negotiators on a collision course, reports Reuters.

The United Kingdom said it plans to allow foreign ships to fish in UK waters after Brexit but claims the right to decide the extent of access.

Both sides consider access imperative to any deal. The UK exports 75 percent of its catch to the European Union, and any restrictions on EU market access would likely take the form of tariffs, which could be as high as 24 percent on seafood.
