US President Donald Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., said Tuesday on Twitter he opposes the Pebble Mine project that could harm Alaska's most valuable salmon fishery.

“As a sportsman who has spent plenty of time in the area, I agree 100%. The headwaters of Bristol Bay and the surrounding fishery are too unique and fragile to take any chances with,” his Twitter said.

Trump Jr. also retweeted a post from Nick Ayers, former chief of staff to US Vice President Mike Pence, where Ayers asked the president to step in and prevent the mine from being approved.

Last month the US Army Corps of Engineers released its Final Environment Impact Statement (EIS) for the controversial Pebble Mine proposed for Alaska's Bristol Bay, angering fishermen who have been protesting the project for more than a decade.

The Trump administration has so far, been streamlining the permitting process, which was dead under the Obama Administration.

Last year the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) removed Obama-era proposed restrictions on mining operations in Alaska’s Bristol Bay that could have prevented construction of one Alaska's largest proposed mining projects.

The Trump administration’s EPA decision removed Obama-era water pollution limitations that were completed in 2014, which concluded the Pebble Mine, a largescale copper and gold mining project, could have devastating effects on the world’s largest wild salmon run in Bristol Bay.

Trump Jr. is not the only one to attract major media focus from tweeting about the project.

Last year, American celebrity Leonardo DiCaprio tweeted about his opposition as well.

The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation has also openly advocated against the massive mine.
