On Friday, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) set the opening date for the 2017-18 Newfoundland and Labrador 3Ps groundfish fishery.
The fishery will open Tuesday for cod, Greenland halibut, hake, skate, as well as bycatch for Atlantic halibut. The fishery is not open for the offshore dragger fleet for 3Ps cod at this time.
The Fish, Food and Allied Workers union said in order to “continue to promote a sustainable cod harvest for inshore harvesters in 3Ps” the DFO needs to understand “that inshore harvesters in 3Ps must have exclusive access to cod at these low levels.
