The Chilean Austral hake industrial trawl and longline fishery has been certified to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) sustainability standard, concluding an assessment process that began in October 2017.

Austral hake is one of the most exported wild-caught species of Chile, aside from mackerel and cod. The fish is shipped almost exclusively to Spain and the United States. According to the report by the MSC, demand dropped in 2010 due to "trade associations deals between the artisanal and industrial fisheries."
