Carrefour Spain is claiming a world first with the launch of blockchain technology for fresh fish.

The multinational retailer said it is the first time that blockchain has been used for an extractive fishing product.

The product sold by Carrefour includes in its labeling a QR code that can be scanned through smartphones, allowing consumers to know which vessel made the catch, coordinates of the fishing area, fishing gear used, the exact location of the fish market where it was landed, how it was prepared and when it was delivered to Carrefour.
