Canada's commercial fishing industry is reeling in the wake of this week's Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) decision to close nearly 60 percent of the country's commercial salmon fisheries for the 2021 season in an effort to drastically consolidate the industry and reverse the decline of wild stock in the wake of climate change.

"We were anticipating a fleet rationalization plan but the closures were a complete blindside," Dane Chauvel, co-founder of Organic Ocean Seafood in Vancouver, Canada, told IntraFish.
