Tradition is a marvellous thing - when it doesn't stand in the way of a better alternative.
That was clear to me after watching a video from the Faroes firm Oilwind showing its electrically driven computer controlled automatic jigging machine (Type 03-16) which is used for catching mackerel (the firm also makes hydraulically driven machines).
When I first heard of using machines costing £1700 plus VAT to catch mackerel, my immediate reaction was: "You must be joking". But after seeing the machine in action aboard two boats from Lerwick I am far less sceptical.
